Home as a Little Church

Monday, February 27th, 2012

I wrote this for the upcoming Parent-Link newsletter:

I love to read. I haven’t always loved to read, but it seems that along with my abounding salvation, it had pleased Jesus to give me a veracious appetite for reading. This has turned out to be a good desire for a current student and pastor in training. Oh the wisdom of God.

This love for reading has many books constantly flowing into my office and onto my shelves. However, as my library grows, there are certain books that never get too far from my heart. One of those books is Matthew Henry’s commentary on the whole bible. If you’re not familiar with this commentary, I heartedly recommend it (you can access it online for free at ccel.com). Among the many reasons for why I love this commentary, the ones that stand highest are its clarity, pastoral heart and how it conveys Henry’s undeniable love for the Savior and His people. When I read, I feel as thought I am in the home of Henry himself and that he is lovingly expounding the beautiful truths of God’s Word to me so I may rejoice in Jesus with him.

After reading up on Henry’s home life, it makes a bit more sense why I feel this way. One biographer explains the home life of Henry as follows:

Matthew’s conduct in his family…was in a great measure regulated by the example of his pious father, of whose house those who had access to it were ready to say, This is no other than the house of God and the gate of heaven. Matthew was constant in the worship of God in his family, morning and evening, which nothing was suffered to prevent…He was never tedious, but always full and comprehensive, performing much in a little time, which seldom exceeded half an hour…When the whole was ended, his children came to him for his blessing, which he gave with solemnity and affection.

Before he was a pastor at church or a writer at his desk, he was a husband and father at home and he took that responsibility seriously and joyfully. For Henry, the family was not only to be a good legacy, but a good inheritance to leave for his children. It was Henry that said about the family: “Here the reformation must begin.”

So where does that leave us? If you’re like me, you didn’t have a father or mother who led the family in worship and, though you have the desire to make your home into a house of God and gateway to heaven, you don’t know where to start. For that reason, let me answer the basic questions of how to get to joy filled times of family worship.

    1) What Should We Do? Nothing complex! I think the basics of a fruitful time of family worship should include the three elements of reading, praying and singing. Whether it be chapter-by-chapter or following along with South Shore’s current series, read from the Bible and discuss it with your family. Then pray with and for your family in light of the passage of scripture you just read. Lastly, choose a song to sing together. Don’t underestimate the power of songs in teaching your children the scripture. Choose songs that are filled with Biblical truth. If you desire suggestions on where to find songs appropriate for each age feel free to email me! I have tons of resources.

    2) How Should We Start? Explain why you want to begin times of family worship. The easiest and most disarming way is to simply say something like this, “I have been convinced by God’s Word that it would please Jesus and bring us great joy if we come together and honor Him in worship as a family and I would like to go in that direction.” How can you say no to that?

    3) Three Basic Reminders: Be brief. Don’t make your children dread family worship by going long. Generally keep it around 15-30 minutes. Be regular. Whether it be after dinner, before bed or in the morning, find a time that works for your family and regularly keep to it so it becomes routine. Be flexible. Some days you wont be able to meet at the regular time so be flexible to alter as needed.

In order to help our church be filled with little churches that worship throughout the week we have produced a Family Worship Packet that goes along with the current teaching series of South Shores called “Uncovered.” Grab a packet to find more helps!

The Goods

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Well here is the first post for The Goods of the week. Hope your blessed. Feel free to give me feedback or responses too!

How to Influence Young Christians: In being a youth pastor who wants to influence young Christians to run hard after Christ, this piece hits close to home and gets me excited. “If I have learned anything in 35 or 40 years of teaching, it is that students don’t learn everything I teach them. What they learn is what I am excited about, the kinds of things I emphasize again and again and again and again. That had better be the gospel.”

The Good News of Sitting Down: Kevin DeYoung offers some brillant insight from the significance of Jesus sitting down at the right hand of the Father. “Having shown himself to be the victor over sin, death, and the devil, it is given to him to sit, not in any old place, but at the place of honor and exaltation at God’s right hand.”

Should I Marry a Man With a Pornography Addiction? This is the latest of Russell Moore’s ongoing ethical dilemma series. If you are unaware of this series click here to see more. You will be intrigued by the serious questions asked and blessed by his answers that are packed with honesty, wisdom, gospel-centeredness and warmth.

Do You Want to Be a Writer? Is so, Douglas Wilson has just come out with a book about writing well and what it entails to become a good writer. Tim Challies has given a brief word on the book and summarizes some of the main points Wilson throws down. Definitely worth a read and, if you want to write better, consider buying the book.

The Dangers of Christian Radio: Christian musician Matt Papa gives an honest word about Christian radio. “Mainstream christian radio is altogether banal and shallow in both a musical sense and a spiritual sense. The songs are man-centered and the DJ’s and radio programmers are man-pleasers. They play the songs that will attract the most listeners to their station, period. Christian radio is like Joel Osteen in musical form: safe, happy, and untruthful. It is the TBN of music: a large-scale, embarrassing presentation of Christianity to the world.” He has put up his second post as well that is worth a look. What are your thoughts?

The Next Billy Graham May Be Drunk Right Now: Also, Russell Moore. This was posted awhile back, but I wanted to present it in the first establishment of The Goods. “Be kind to that atheist in front of you on the highway, the one who just shot you an obscene gesture. He might be the one who evangelizes your grandchildren.”

How to Read the Bible: Thank God that the Bible isn’t about me.

A Song for Saturday

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

If you have musical ability, please use it for the Kingdom because music is a powerful way to proclaim the gospel. For example…

NOW WY THIS FEAR

Verse 1
Now why this fear and unbelief?
Has not the Father put to grief
His spotless Son for us?
And will the righteous Judge of men,
Condemn me for that debt of sin,
Now cancelled at the cross?

Chorus
Jesus, all my trust
Is in Your blood
Jesus, You’ve rescued us
Through Your great love!

Verse 2
Complete atonement You have made,
And by Your death completely paid
The debt Your people owed
No wrath remains for us to face
We’re sheltered by Your saving grace,
And sprinkled with Your blood.

Verse 3
Be still, my soul, and know this peace
The merits of your Great High Priest
Have bought your liberty
Rely then on His precious blood,
Don’t fear your banishment from God
Since Jesus sets you free

Prepared a Place for Me

Monday, December 19th, 2011

I hope this song will bless you today as it did me.

Prepared a Place for Me

PREPARED A PLACE FOR ME

Mystery of mysteries
That God would make for me
A place within His family, though once His enemy
The Judge of every sinner sent Christ to Calvary
To prepare a place for me

Judgment should be given
For this guilt upon my head
But the Father of all glory crushed His Son instead
Now I’ve been adopted, for God made this to be
You prepared a place for me

CHORUS
Blessed be, blessed be
My God and Savior, You’ve shown me favor
And prepared a place for me

Father, in the moment
When Your Son shall split the skies
And myriads of angels acclaim Him with their cries
By grace I will be able to join the jubilee
You prepared a place for me

Rapping for Jesus

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

At our middle school ministry at South Shores, The Ride, this last Wednesday night we got the chance to play a song from a rapper named Shai Linne. The song was called “The Judge of All the Earth”. We played the song for many reasons. One, it is a song about the very topic we taught last week (the righteousness and justice of God). Two, it is packed full of very biblical truth. Finally, it packs a sweet beat. And we like sweet beats.

After the service last night many students approached us and asked about Shai Linne’s song and asked if there were any other rappers like him. Good news! There are tons! We thought it would be a good idea to give you some names and even supply some song samples for you so you can be blessed by these Christian brothers and their amazing giftedness at writing rich lyrics into quality music. As you listen to the songs below (or any songs from these guys) make sure you pay attention to the words of the songs. There is deep truth packed into

So here they are, we hope you are blessed!

LECRAE

“At 19-years-old, at the encouragement of a Christian leader, Lecrae attended a conference and heard James White deliver a message that turned his world upside down and showed him his need for a Savior.

A graduate of University of North Texas, Lecrae now resides in Atlanta, GA with his wife and children. He and his wife are small group leaders at their church, and his passion for impacting urban culture persists. With a musically evolving and successful discography, nationwide tours along with the 116 Clique, and a generation of young believers around the world inspired to live unashamed; Lecrae is humbled by his position in the growing movement to spread the Gospel. His hope is that Reach’s impact will spread far beyond simply the music and into the lives of individuals across the globe, ultimately exalting Jesus Christ.”

Here’s a sample from Lecrae’s cd called Rehab. The song is called boasting.

SHAI LINNE

“Long story short, I was abruptly converted as an adult. While I was intoxicated at a party, out of nowhere I began to consider things my mother had told me years before. When I told her what was going on, she encouraged me to read the Gospel of John. As I read, I was struck by the authority with which Jesus spoke. His claims to deity were both surprising and compelling to me. By God’s grace, I believed the gospel while reading, and crossed over from death to life in 1999. I’m married to an amazing woman named Blair and we live in Washington, D.C., where we’re members at Capitol Hill Baptist Church.

Shai linne is living proof that God has a wonderful sense of humor. He once told his mom that he would never, ever become a Christian, completely oblivious to the fact that God had chosen him to be a Christian before time began. He doesn’t like the spotlight, so God gave him natural gifts that put him on stage as an actor. He doesn’t like to be in front of people, so God gave him spiritual gifts that are mostly public in nature. shai has appeared on numerous independent and national Christian Hip-hop releases, including his 2005 full-length debut, The Solus Christus Project. All this from someone who doesn’t like hip-hop and never pursued a career in music. Someone in heaven is having a big laugh at his expense. After all this time, shai still doesn’t get the joke.”

Here’s a sample of Shai Linne’s music.

Triune Praise

FLAME

“For FLAME, he was headed in the wrong direction until a near fatal car accident and the passing of his grandmother would serve as a rude awakening that took root in shaping his future. His grandmother was the strongest and most influential Christian example in his life. Immediately after her death and the tragic incident, FLAME received Christ at the age of 16.

Now a leader in reforming the culture that he too was engulfed in, the foundation of FLAME’s ministry is to reach those same streets with his soapbox messages to lead his listeners to Christ. As his platform continues to garner the support of many along the way, FLAME now reigns amongst the forefront runners in the Christian Rap industry known to challenge and encourage its audience with an unwavering clear presentation of the Gospel.”

Joyful Noise

TRIP LEE

“William Lee Barefield III, better known as Trip Lee, was born and raised in Dallas, TX. As a child, Trip Lee had dreams of being a professional athlete or famous rapper, and he began to hone his lyrical skills at the age of 12. ‘I rapped about random stuff…how hot I was, how many girls I could pull,” Trip says. But upon giving his life to Christ, at age 14, his focus changed from fortune, fame, and women to serving and ministering the Gospel.’

Trip now resides in Philadelphia, PA with his wife and is pursuing a degree in Biblical Studies at Philadelphia Biblical University. He is the leader of the small groups ministry at Epiphany Fellowship, where he also occasionally preaches and teaches. Trip’s unending desire is to proclaim the grace and beauty of Jesus Christ to anyone that will listen; ultimately, he hopes this journey will someday lead to pastoring a church.”

Seize Today

Monday, September 19th, 2011

I am taking a class on spiritual formation right now in seminary and so far it has been good for my soul. Each week the class assigns a prayer project students are to complete and write a reflection about. The assignments are designed to have students think deeply about their walk with Christ and about the state of their soul.

The last prayer project assigned had us meditate and pray through temptations we face with our hearts, our time and the method by which we take on seminary studies. I would like to share with you something I think God impressed upon my heart in that sweet time of focused reflection and prayer. I wrote the following in my journal:

Lord, teach me the value of the present day. Keep me away from believing the future holds significant work and that I should wait for that, Today is the day I am called to live in. Tomorrow should not keep me from what you have called me to do today. Help me live fully today. Strengthen me to fully pour myself out into each day. Give me the love and wisdom to make the most of every opportunity, to love the most in each relationship, to serve, to pray, to sing and to seek you. Take away the heart which calls me to wait on things that I should seek today.

Are there things you are putting off for later in life? Remember that later is not promised to you.

Don’t wait to serve Jesus with a whole heart. Seize today. In your family, in your schools, in your classes. Live out the riches of the gospel where you are today. Tomorrow is not promised. Our time on earth is not long, so make the most of every opportunity because the days are evil and the King is coming.

Don’t let the hours of sweet opportunity pass by. Turn each gifted hour into a sacrifice of praise for Jesus.

Good Christian Bands (Part 2)

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

This is a continuation of Part One.

Bifrost Arts

Bifrost Arts is yet another collection of musicians coming together under the same desire to make beautiful sounding and theologically rich songs for the church. In fact, it is more of an organization that seeks to do workshops for churches and worship leaders and they happen to have put out a killer cd with a ton of variety in musicians and instruments. Many of the songs have an old-pre1950′s jazz like sound and lots of change in dynamics.

Here’s a sample of one of my favorites:Be Still My Soul

Caedmon’s Call

Caedmon’s Call has been around forever. I particularly love (most) of their songs and their tendency to take on time honored songs of long ago and their ability to write new songs. One thing Caedmon does well is write songs that have a good prophetic edge. They want to address issues they see in church life and speak to them with God’s Word via their music. I really recommend their newer cd In The Company of Angels II.

Here’s a sample of one of my favorites:Fellowship So Deep

Page XCVI

Page XCVI (read Page 116) is the most different of the bands I have spoken of much because of their style. They have the same philosophy of rich content met with contemporary music, but the type of contemporary music they play is much darker in feel and has an edge to it that isn’t shared among the other bands. I like to listen to Page when I am in a slaying demons kind of mood. Highly recommended.

I bet you haven’t heard In Christ Alone played like this:In Christ Alone

Jars of Clay (Redemption Songs)

Jars of Clay, like Caedmon’s Call, has been around the Christian music biz for a long time now. I am not a huge fan of all their music, some I like more than others, but I have fallen in love with their cd Redemption Songs. They take on cherished hymns from church history and give them some contemporary love without lessening the goodness.

Here’s a sample:Hiding Place

I hope these were helpful in your search for good music both in style, skill and lyrics! If you have any suggestions for me throw them my way. I am always up for new music.

A Gospel Song from Sovereign Grace

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

“Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly…as you sing…” Colossians 3:16
